Start with a vintage center-hole french weave willow creel and add Freeman Mariner's classic leather tooling skills and the result is something special. When these come up for sale at Lang's Fishing Tackle Auctions they usually go for $3500+.
Extensive hand-tooled cowhide. Free's familiar basketweave design wraps the front, back, bottom and pocket. He has tooled beautiful oak leaves and acorns into the lid, hole cover and on front pockets. A solid brass buckle keeps the lid snug and a tooled leather handle completes the look. Included is a fully tooled brass clip harness and a lambs wool padded harness strap. This is some of Free's best work and would be a great addition to any collection.
Creel measures 10-1/2 inches across lid, stands 9 inches tall, and measures 13-1/2 inches across bottom. Creel and harness are both die stamped with Freeman's mark. This creel was completed a few of years ago for me by Free and is in excellent condition with only minor breaks and scuffs as shown in the images below. It is from my personal collection.
Freeman is referenced in The Art of the Creel book (page 183) by Hugh Chatham and Dan McClain. This is one of three baskets I had leathered for my collection and is a hard-to-find and desirable item for serious creel collectors. (Freeman has leathered only about 50 creels, and very few of those were center-hole baskets)
